The article presents a study of cognitive verbs used by Sweden-Swedish and Finland-Swedish students and supervisors in academic supervision meetings. The data consist of naturally occurring interactions. The meetings are conducted in Swedish at universities in Sweden and Finland.

The results show that the amount and proportion of cognitive verbs are higher in the Sweden-Swedish data. In both data sets, supervisors use more cognitive verbs than students. However, the Finland-Swedish students use more cognitive verbs than the Sweden-Swedish students. The results also show smaller differences as regards the emphasis on certain semantic fields and the usage of specific cognitive verbs.

This article shows how supervisors and students use cognitive verbs such as think or know in Sweden-Swedish and Finland-Swedish supervision meetings. Drawing on the research framework of variational pragmatics, we highlight similarities and differences between the use of cognitive verbs in the Sweden-Swedish and the Finland-Swedish interactions.

The analysis shows that supervisors in both data sets use cognitive verbs in order to modify the strength and directness of their feedback. One difference is that while the Finland-Swedish supervisors tend to mitigate their on-going feedback through references to the past, e. The students in both the Sweden-Swedish and the Finland-Swedish supervision meetings use cognitive verbs e.

A difference, however, is that the Sweden-Swedish students to a higher extent than the Finland-Swedish students use cognitive verbs to deliver supportive feedback, while the Finland-Swedish students more frequently than their Sweden-Swedish peers do so when reporting their own thoughts and opinions about the text.

Sharing language but not communicative patterns: Feedback in Sweden-Swedish and Finland-Swedish academic counselling interaction. In this article, we present a study of oral feedback back-channels and responsive turns given in academic counselling meetings between an essay supervisor and one or two students. The purpose of these meetings is to discuss and improve an academic text written by the students. Our data consist of naturally occurring Sweden-Swedish and Finland-Swedish institutional interactions at the university level.

The overall aim of the study is to compare feedback patterns in the Sweden-Swedish and the Finland- Swedish data and to contribute to the field of variational pragmatics. A detailed analysis of the recorded interactions reveals overt differences in the frequency, intensity and distribution of feedback in the two varieties of Swedish. In the Sweden-Swedish data, there is a preference for relational work, evidenced, for instance, by students praising the advice given by the supervisor.

In the Finland-Swedish data, an orientation towards clarity is prominent and corrective advice, for instance, is usually uttered in a straightforward way. Our results support previous findings on communicative patterns in Sweden and Finland. These findings highlight the dialogic nature of institutional communication in Sweden, on the one hand, and the orientation to the task and its result in comparable situations in Finland, on the other. The outcome of this study adds to the understanding of the communicative patterns of Sweden- Swedish and Finland-Swedish with a detailed analysis of the oral feedback occurring in counselling meetings.

In this chapter, we study face-to-face meetings between students and supervisors, where the focus of the meeting is supervision of academic writing.

Using conversation analysis, we study videorecorded, naturally occurring interactions. This study deals with the phenomenon of graves without any bone material combined with an application test of a portable X-Ray fluorescence detector pXRF instrument on simulated burial soils to see if we could get any closer understanding of this phenomenon. To test the instruments applicability on these types of conditions, an experiment was conducted with three different soil types.

These were placed in separated, specifically pre prepared plastic tubes in groups of three per soil type and then prepared with circa 9 grams of cremated animal bones that was grinded down to a powder. The tubes were then subjected to eater flow equivalent to circa 50 years of rainfall.

The tubes were thereafter disassembled and soil samples where gathered and analyzed with a pXRF. The results showed little movement of the bone powder and clear spikes of Ca and P could be seen at the place of disposal of the bone powder and some spreading sideways and down in the tube. The study also search for Mg as an indicator for bone material alongside Ca and P but no clear results could be reached due to excessive variation.

The method of using pXRF in the search for bone material in soils has, as seen in the results of this study, great potential even though more research is needed to reach a better understanding of the methods limitations. Gällande kategorin ålder är det genomgående ett tydligt normöverskridande. Forty-five students responded to a self-assessment questionnaire survey regarding their comprehension of lectures in the L1 and lectures in English.

The scores from these were compared to each other to see if English lectures are more difficult to comprehend than lectures in the L1 and if so, to what extent.

The findings show that, although not substantial, most students find almost all aspects regarding English lectures to be more difficult than L1 lectures. This is in line with what other studies investigating the effects of English Medium Instruction in higher education have found. The most prominent issues were with unfamiliar vocabulary and expressions as well as unclear pronunciation of content. This essay assesses the impact of plain language campaigns in EU legislation.

Different types of legislation as well as legislation with different intended recipients are analysed. The analysis includes calculating a LIX index score and complementing the index data with data from the texts.

The data derives from textual parameters associated with plain language. The distinction between the recipient and the actual reader of legislation in the EU will also be discussed as the general public is asserted by the EU to be the reader of legislative acts. It is, however, shown in this essay that the general public is not the reader of legislative acts directed to them.

The hypothesis in this essay is that there has been an impact of plain language in legislative acts in the EU over time, as a result of plain language campaigns in the EU. We may also see a difference in the impact of plain language between specific types of legislation and between legislation directed to different intended recipients. A specialist audience may be considered to have a higher competence of the register of law compared to the general public. However, as the results from the analysis are inconclusive we cannot see any coherent impact of plain language in the texts analysed in this essay.

The analysis also suggests that using textual features associated with plain language is not an effective tool to use to assess improvement in terms of readability and impact of plain language over time.

The different textual parameters do not cohere. In addition to the above, the impact of plain language in relation to translation in the EU is discussed.

Consequently, by making an original language version of legislation less complex, the quality of translations may be improved. The qualitative analysis regarding plain language in translation suggests that a short, non-complex sentence in combination with the use of high frequency words enables a more natural translation in the Swedish language versions.

The analysis also suggests some changes seen over time in relation to plain language in the translation process. I uppsatsen undersöks orsakerna till det ökade intresset till samlande. I have analysed vocabulary which concerns media, advertising and public relations in Poland. First of all I show in my thesis the research and development of the professional language in Poland. Afterwards I study the word's lexical in my work, as a criterion taken to the Polish language. English words that have been taken are researched , because this vocabulary is very young in the Polish commercial market.

I have studied the taken words for meaning, how these words function and factors within and outside this process within Polish language. Also in my thesis are new polish words. In my thesis I analysis a new Polish vocabulary, which are used in media, advertising and public relations. This vocabulary are neologisms. On account of their practically unchallenged status as guardians of objective knowledge, dictionaries are influential elements of societal discourses.

They are thus an authoritarian producer and reproducer of societal norms and ideas, and as an interesting object of investigation in critical lexicography consequently lend themselves to the investigation of authoritarian and normalising societal discourses on specific themes. However, dictionaries have to date only been used as primary sources for critical analysis on rare occasions. This study is an attempt at a corrective which explores the presentation of Islam in three editions of the Duden German Universal Dictionary Deutsches Universalwörterbuch.

The dictionaries studied present Islam to all intents and purposes as the Other. Christianity is established as a norm and the Self, and the Christian way of practising religion is depicted as prototypical for all other religions.

However, the emphasis on Christianity and the exclusion of Islam also has a positive effect on the portrayal of Islam, as old prejudices on the alleged brutality of Islam are thus not reproduced.
