By the time Apur Sansar was released, Satyajit Ray had directed not only the first two Apu films but also the masterpiece The Music Room, and was well on his way to becoming a legend. Apu is now in his early twenties, out of college, and hoping to live as a writer. Alongside his professional ambitions, the film charts his romantic awakening, which occurs as the result of a most unlikely turn of events, and his eventual, fraught fatherhood.

Cosmic Sex. One night eighteen year old Kripa has a fight with his father over his stepmother. There is an accident. His father dies. He has murdered his father. Scared, he runs away from home. The night throws up characters and encounters for Kripa. Devi the street walker, Jonaki her transgender pimp… Kripa is entrapped in the web of love, sex and jealousy. He murders again. Jonaki dies. Kripa runs on… At dawn Kripa sits by the banks of the river Ganges. The serene river soothes his frayed nerves.

A woman emerges out of the water. There is no end to this night. She is his dead mother come alive. He follows her. She takes him into her house. She adopts him as her son. She gives him a new life, another birth. She teaches him to travel inwards into himself using his sexual energy…No one bothers him here… Kripa journeys on…. Asha Jaoar Majhe. They are married to a cycle of work and domestic routine, and long stretches of waiting in the silence of an empty house.

They share each other's solitude in pursuit of a distant dream that visits them briefly every morning. Incorporating poignant political undertones, director Aditya Vikram Sengupta creates a stylistically beautiful film that depicts the challenges of sustaining love in a fast transitioning world via a simultaneous sensation of breathlessness and space. A young newly married couple Rimi and Bikram are living happily. One day the girl's paternal uncle dies and leaves behind an old traditional house in the northern part of the city of Kolkata, India.

Though hesitant about how to maintain such a big property, they shift to their new residence. But they need to rent out a portion to maintain the property. The right kind of tenant is difficult to find. But finally one day Tiasha in her mid-thirties who works in an NGO comes along.

The three gel well and Tiasha Rituparna Sengupta moves in as the new tenant. Life is good as a nice friendship develops between the three. But then the things take an ugly turn finally reaching a spine chilling climax. It is a piece of social document on patriarchy and tries to capture the changing face of morality, the degeneration of values, the increasing pollution of the spoken language and the changing social fabric of Bengal through three stories.

Spread over a hundred years, the three stories are structured in the manner of the classical Three Act Play with each act read story exploring one facet of an obsessive relationship outside the purview of marriage. This period piece is the story of an 8-year-old boy's emotional attachment and obsession with a newly married girl. The film opens in Calcutta and then moves to rural Bengal. It is an ambitious single room drama about two men - the lover and the husband - of a woman who has ended her life the evening before.

Through the dialogue between the two characters we see a third emerge and discover the frailties of each relationship and what role each man had in the woman's suicide. This Roald Dahl-esque story with a series of twists and turns looks into the darkness that looms beneath the surface of human beings and how manipulative human relationships have become. Aparajito picks up where the first film leaves off, with Apu and his family having moved away from the country to live in the bustling holy city of Varanasi then known as Benares.

As Apu progresses from wide-eyed child to intellectually curious teenager, eventually studying in Kolkata, we witness his academic and moral education, as well as the growing complexity of his relationship with his mother. This tenderly expressive, often heart-wrenching film, which won three top prizes at the Venice Film Festival, including the Golden Lion, not only extends but also spiritually deepens the tale of Apu.
